I was shopping on Amazon.com today and at the bottom of their deals page is a message board. A lady was wanting to know how to handle a situation with her 2 year old. You see, she doesn't do the Santa legend with her child because she doesn't want to "lie" to her child... for them to grow up and not be able to trust her parents because they lied about Santa...
OMG.. did she open a can of worms. it's the hottest thread on there! People jumpin in left and right about how silly she is. Someone brought up that some lies are neccessary. and she responded 'yes, I know.. like when I tell my child that there is a law that kids can't drink soda, and when I say, we're out of cookies, but here's a carrot'.
Whoa! Someone responded that took the words right out of my mouth: "Oh I get it now...It IS OK to lie about some things? That makes you a hypocrite. Why do you need to lie about giving the kid a cookie when you want him to have a carrott? Why don't you tell the truth since you are so big on it? People like you disturb me. The *lesson* you are teaching the kid is it IS OK to lie if the circumstances make the lie easier then the truth."
We do the whole Santa thing. It's pretty powerful too. I do still *believe* in the things unexplained, miracles, or what have you. Does a guy in a red suit come down my chimney and deliver a bunch of gifts? not that I'm aware of.. but we also are able to provide for our family. What about a family who has hit a rough spot, can't seem to catch a break... but suddenly is delivered a bundle of food and gifts from someone anoymous or a church/charity. That's like Santa.. could something "higher" be at work? Maybe. Who am I to say-- but Merry Christmas :)
